Ian Duncan-Smith has today unveiled a plan to change the nature of welfare entitlements in the U.K. in a radical and meaningful way: Penalties for those on unemployment benefit who do not accept a job offered to them, limits on how much a family can receive in total in benefits, proper monitoring of those on disability benefits to make sure they are really eligible, limits on what is paid on housing benefit, and much more.
Along with eliminating the government's structural deficit by 2015, this will go a long way toward reducing government expenditure in the future, getting more people into work, and thus helping to keep us out of deficit into the future.
Well done, IDS!
